Lecture Series
The J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Lecture Series exists to broaden educational experiences for students at the Leadership Institute at Allen Temple, as well as engage with Bay Area communities and reach a broader audience online. The Lecture Series also seeks, to engage and encourage thought provoking discussion on issues of leadership, human needs and social justice.
Each year the J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Lecture Series brings distinguished, nationally and internationally known scholars to educate individuals, leaders in the church, academy and community. 2026 Leadership Intersession Weekend is a dynamic, multi-day learning and worship experience hosted by the Leadership Institute at Allen Temple and Allen Temple Baptist Church, taking place January 22–25, 2026. The weekend begins with evening Zoom sessions on Thursday and Friday from 6:30–8:00/8:30 p.m., featuring timely conversations on social crisis preaching, ministry to the Deaf community, leadership wellness, and prophetic witness. The experience continues Saturday, January 24, from 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. with in-person leadership training and dialogue at the Allen Temple Baptist Church campus, followed by a LIAT Orientation from 3:15–4:00 p.m. via Zoom. The weekend concludes with Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m., featuring Dr. Charley Hames, Jr. as the Sunday Morning Preacher, offering a powerful close to a weekend of learning, reflection, and renewal.
